All-in-one power solution supplies main/system power and battery charging

Maxim's latest battery-charger IC integrates dual Quick-PWM(TM) step-down controllers to deliver the most compact power solution for notebooks, UMPCs, MIDs, and other portable applications.

SUNNYVALE, CA--April 27, 2010--Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX17085B, a highly integrated power solution that combines a multichemistry battery charger with dual Quick-PWM step-down controllers. This integration saves board space and reduces component cost by eliminating the need for separate ICs. The battery charger's switching frequency is rated for operation up to 1.2MHz to allow the use of smaller inductors. Dual SMPSs with dual keep-alive linear regulators supply system power in the off, standby, and alive states. With this high level of integration, the MAX17085B is well suited for notebooks, UMPCs, MIDs, and other portable applications in which space and component cost are critical.

The charge-voltage setting is adjustable and accurate to ±0.4%. The charge current is also adjustable by an analog or PWM input. Internal 5V/100mA and 3.3V/50mA LDOs generate always-on power supplies. Overvoltage, undervoltage, thermal, and other fault-protection features are also included.
The MAX17085B is available in a space-saving, 5mm x 5mm, 40-pin TQFN package with an exposed pad. It is fully specified over the -40 degrees Celsius to +105 degrees Celsius temperature range. Prices start at $2.45 (1000-up, FOB USA). An evaluation kit with recommended external components is available to reduce design time.
