MAXIM  05.05.2010

  • The MAX4952B is a bidirectional SAS/eSATA/SATA redriver.
  • This device allows the system to support SAS/SATA 6Gbps data rates over long cables and through connectors.
  • The MAX4952B features redrive capability on both the transmit and receive channels to ensure high-bandwidth signal integrity.
  • The redriver is intended for use in servers, storage equipment, and other systems that must ensure signal integrity when communicating with a SAS/SATA/eSATA device.

Dual SAS/SATA redriver supports speeds up to 6Gbps in power-sensitive applications

Maxim's new dual-channel redriver ensures high-bandwidth signal integrity to enable system compliance with the SAS/SATA 6Gbps specification.

SUNNYVALE, CA--April 28, 2010--Maxim Integrated Products (NASDAQ: MXIM) introduces the MAX4952B, a dual-channel buffer designed to redrive SAS/eSATA/SATA signals at speeds up to 6.0Gbps on both the transmit and receive channels. This device preserves signal integrity at the receiver by reestablishing full output levels, and it can reduce total system jitter (TJ) by squaring the signal. The MAX4952B is designed for applications such as servers in which the user needs to route the signal through connectors and over long backplanes, onto a mezzanine board, and through an external connector while being compliant with the Serial ATA International Organization: Serial ATA Revision 3.0 (SATA 6Gbps). It is also well suited for workstations that must carry signals over long cables and boards while overcoming losses on the PCB and in the eSATA connector.

The MAX4952B supports SAS/SATA out-of-band (OOB) signaling by using high-speed amplitude detection on the inputs and amplitude squelch on the corresponding outputs. When in SAS mode, input signals of 120mVp-p or less are detected as off and not passed to the output. When in SATA mode, the OOB detection circuitry squelches any input signal less than 50mVp-p. This approach prevents the system from responding to unwanted noise, while still allowing OOB signals to transmit through the MAX4952B.

This redriver integrates a power-down mode to squelch the output through an enable input, as well as independent output-boost controls. The independent boost control allows users to program each redriver channel to overcome losses presented by the board, as well as any other losses seen in the signal path.

The MAX4952B operates from a single 3.3V supply, and is fully specified over the 0 degrees Celsius to +70 degrees Celsius commercial temperature range. It is available in an ultra-small, 4mm x 4mm, 20-pin TQFN package. Prices start at $2.50 (1000-up, FOB USA).
